Copperhead Trail/Original KFC

Tuesday July 8th

We will have a riders’ briefing at 8:30am. Kickstands up at 9:00am. We should have police escort out of town to start this 135 mile loop through the Daniel Boone National Forest. It will be about 3 1/2 to 4 hours ride time plus stops.

We head South on 27 to Whitley City where we will hop on The Copperhead Trail. Our first stop will be in Williamsburg. If you can’t confidently go 135 miles on a tank of gas, please top of your tank at this stop. From Williamsburg, we’ll head up to Corbin for lunch at the original Kentucky Fried Chicken/Sanders Cafe & Museum. After lunch, we hop back on The Copperhead Trail on our way to our next stop at Cumberland Falls State Park. From the falls, we’ll finish out The Copperhead Trail back to Whitley City and back up 27 to Somerset.

Here’s a link to the route on Google My Maps. The route has our stops on it, but I have marked other gas and food stops in case you want to do it on your own.

Eye of the Dragon – Red River Gorge

We had some folks express interest in the Red River Gorge area. I put a route together over to the Eye of the Dragon in the Red River Gorge and back. This would be an all day ride if you stop to see all the sites.

The route is about 260 miles and 6 1/2 – 7 hours ride time plus stops through the Daniel Boone National Forrest and Red River Gorge area. The Eye of the Dragon part of the route will take you through the Nada Tunnel, by the Sky Bridge and Natural Bridge state park.

On the route map linked below, I have marked several gas and food stops along the route. The route itself has some suggested stops. One is the Sky Bridge Arch. You can walk out onto the arch. Natural Bridge State Park is nearby too. There is a chair lift to the top of it and you can walk out on it as well.

Gorge Underground – Red River Gorge

We had some folks express interest in Gorge Underground. Gorge Underground is a kayak/boat adventure through a flooded mine over in the Red River Gorge. See the link below. I put a route together over and back. This would be an all day ride if you choose to do it.

The route is about 220 miles and 5 – 5 1/2 hours ride time plus stops. It will take you through the Daniel Boone National Forest and the Red River Gorge area. Gorge Underground is near the Nada Tunnel, the Sky Bridge and Natural Bridge state park. I’m not sure that you’d have time to see all these things if you do the kayaking/boating adventure.

On the route map linked below, I have marked several gas and food stops along the route. The route itself has some suggested stops. One is in McKee where there is a really nice Veteran’s Memorial.

The Dam Ride

There are a few lakes around Rally Central. This ride will take you through some scenic and/or curvy roads to visit a few of the dams that make these lakes.

The route is about 250 miles and 5 1/2 – 6 hours ride time plus stops. THIS ONE WILL DIP INTO TENNESSEE SO YOU’LL NEED YOUR HELMET.

The dams you will see make the Laurel River Lake, Dale Hollow Lake and Lake Cumberland. This route will also take you by Cumberland Falls.

I have marked several gas and food stops on the map. The route has suggested gas and food stops as well as parking areas near the dams.

Scouts Honor

This route is named Scouts Honor because it goes through Burnside, KY, the birthplace of Boy Scouts of America. This scenic route takes you all the way around Lake Cumberland.

This is a shorter route about 115 miles and 2 1/2 – 3 hour ride time plus stops.

I have marked several gas and food stops along and near the route. There are some points of interests marked too. There is a historical marker slightly off the route in Burnside for the first troop of the Boy Scouts of America. Also along the way is the Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument.

Old Ft. Harrod/Perryville Battlefield State Park

If you’re interested in a little Kentucky history, this ride may be for you! MOST importantly, it includes a stop at one of our favorite ice cream stops – the Burgin Dairy Barn.

This route is around 200 miles and about 4 1/2 – 5 hour ride time plus stops. On the route map linked below, I have marked several gas and food stops along the route. The route itself has some suggested stops at Burgin Dairy Barn, Old Ft. Harrod, Perryville Battlefield and Creek Side Family Restaurant.

First stop is Burgin Dairy Barn. They open at 11:00 and it’ll take you about 1 1/2 hours to get there so plan your start time accordingly. They have food there for a light lunch and more importantly some delicious ice cream. Old Ft. Harrod was built in the later 1700s for the first settlers in this area when Kentucky was “out west.” The Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site was a Civil War battle site. Next stop, Penn’s store. Penn’s is a small country store that’s been around almost forever. Try the pickled bologna and a Ski. If you took your time at Ft. Harrod and Perryville, you’ll probably be hungry by the time you get to Campbellsville. I’ve suggested a stop at Creek Side Family Restaurant, but there are other places to eat there as well.

Natural Arch/Big South Fork Scenic RR

This is a shorter ride option I would recommend if you are planning to ride, or just visit, the Big South Fork Scenic Railroad.

The route is around 110 miles and about 3 – 3 1/2 hours ride time plus stops. This ride stops at the Monticello-Wayne County Park, Big South Fork Scenic RR and the Natural Arch Scenic Area. There is a restaurant at the Big South Fork RR if you want to time your ride to have lunch there. Natural Arch Scenic Area has a voluntary $5 cash admission fee. There is an overlook close to the parking lot, or you can hike to the arch. There are a lot of steps and elevation changes on the trail. There appears to be a couple potential ice cream stops along the way.

On the route map linked below, I have marked several gas and food stops along the route. The route itself has some suggested stops including the Monticello-Wayne County Park, Big South Fork Scenic RR and Natural Arch Scenic Area.

Blue Heron Mining Community

Blue Heron is an outdoor museum to give folks a glimpse of the past of this coal mine and community along the Big South Fork River.

This is a shorter route option and nearly identical to the Natural Arch route. If you wanted to make a day of sightseeing, I’d suggest combining the two. This one is 111 miles and about 3 – 3 1/2 hours ride time plus stops.

On the route map linked below, I have marked several gas and food stops along the route. The route itself has some suggested stops including the Wagon Arch, Devil’s Jump Overlook, Blue Heron Overlook and Blue Heron Mining Community.

Sgt Alvin York State Park

Alvin Cullum York (December 13, 1887 – September 2, 1964), also known by his rank as Sergeant York, was an American soldier who was one of the most decorated United States Army soldiers of World War I.

This route is very similar to the Scouts Honor ride, but the South end dips into Tennessee to the Sgt Alvin York State Park. The route is around 145 mi and about 3 – 3 1/2 hours ride plus stops to Sgt Alvin York State Park and around Lake Cumberland. THIS ONE WILL DIP INTO TENNESSEE SO YOU’LL NEED YOUR HELMET.

On the route map linked below, I have marked several gas and food stops along the route. The route itself has some suggested stops including the Sgt Alvin York State Park and a couple of gas stations for pit stops/refueling. There are a few things around the park to see. Sgt York’s home, grave site and family farm and mill and York Country store are all near the park.

Tebb's Bend Battlefield Park

Here is a chance to check out some Kentucky history with a ride to Tebb’s Bend Battlefield Park. The ride is around 215 miles and about 5 – 5 1/2 hours ride time plus stops. I would suggest groups of no more than 10 or 12 bikes. The parking area at the Battle of Tebb’s Bend Monument is very limited.

The Battle of Tebbs Bend (or Tebb’s Bend or Green River Bridge) was fought on July 4, 1863, near the Green River in Taylor County, Kentucky during Morgan’s Raid in the American Civil War. Despite being badly outnumbered, elements of the Union Army defeated Confederate Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan’s dismounted cavalry.

On the route map linked below, I have marked several gas and food stops along the route. The route itself has some suggested stops including Shell in Liberty for pit stop/fuel, Green River Lake Visitor Center, Battle of Tebb’s Bend Monument, Tebb’s Bend Battlefield Park, Colton’s Steak House, Penn’s Store and Shell in Liberty for pit stop/fuel.

At the Green River Lake Visitor Center, there is the Atkinson – Griffin Log House that served as a hospital after the battle. If it is open, it is also a museum of sorts with information about the battle and surrounding area.

At the Battle of Tebb’s Bend Monument, there is also a cemetery for Confederate soldiers from the battle. The parking area here is small and is gravel and also on a small incline. You can park carefully along the roadway too.

The Tebb’s Bend Battlefield Park parking lot is also gravel but is large and pretty flat. There are also picnic tables under a pavillion there. The old bridge that used to cross the river is also on this property.

Colton’s Steak House is right on the route in Campbellsville.

Penn’s store has been around almost forever and looked like a good place to take a break. Try the pickled bologna and some Ski!
